Wire EDM
Precision and accuracy
Wire EDM makes it possible to create detailed components without affecting the material's structure or creating mechanical stresses. For us at MK Plastteknik, EDM is an important part of our production capacity – we use EDM to manufacture custom components with precision and accuracy.
How does wire EDM work?
The technology is based on electrical discharges between a thin wire and the workpiece. This means that the material is removed through sparks rather than through mechanical impact. The result? A machining process that enables complicated shapes, sharp edges and details that would otherwise be difficult to manufacture using traditional methods.
Spark discharge machining is used in a variety of industries, from toolmaking to medical technology and aerospace. The method is particularly effective for creating molds, dies and other precision components where dimensional tolerances and surface finish are critical.
Advantages of Electrical Discharge Machining
What makes wire EDM so attractive is the high precision – we are talking about tolerances on the micrometer level. Since there is no physical contact between tool and material, the risk of deformation is eliminated, which is crucial when machining thin or delicate components. In addition, the method can be used on materials that are otherwise difficult to machine, such as hardened steel and carbide.
The technology is also burr-free, meaning the surface is clean and smooth without the need for post-processing, reducing both production steps and overall costs.
